Dynasty Warriors 05

By: Old Jimsy

I've been playing a lot of Dynasty Warriors 05 recently and I must say: DON'T LISTEN TO THE REVIEWERS !! I know that Dynasty Warriors isn't the best game, but it's not bad either. The reviewers seem to believe that they have to point out all the bad parts of DW. And as a fan I'm really freaking sick of it. I admit that DW05 isn't the greatest game out there, but not many games are these days. If you play the game you will also find that the reviewers seem to have some hatred for DW. Why would they? Because Koei, the publisher of DW has become infamous for making lots of expansions for the DW series, which doesn't really make much sense. Why not have expansions for a fun game? Oh that's right, because DW is a mindless hack 'n slash. Right. It's not. I'm not saying it's incredibly complex, but it's not mindless. Mindless implies to me that it's really easy to beat the game. Put it on hard then tell me that. Or better yet chaos where normal troops do chunks and chunks of your health, then tell me that you are just whipping through this game. Also, what would you classify all the shooter games out there? Couldn't they be considered shoot n' kills? Hack n' slash games are really the same as shooters, with swords instead of guns, yet most reviewers love the equivalent of DW with guns yet hate DW. But, enough about reviewers whose personal opinions are their own to have (even if they are really stupid). What I will do is address the things the reviews said, trying to keep my own hate for most reviewers out of the way.

One of the things that you will most likely read or hear in most reviews is the mocking of Cao Pi's name, despite how immature it is. Well guess what. Like almost all of the names in DW this one was mispronounced by the voice actors. I looked up pronouncing the Pinyin translation of chinese and C is pronounced like the ts in the word "hats". So it is pronounced Tsao Pi, not Cao Pi. This leads me right into the next subject: voice actors.

That's one thing that plagues DW, the voice actors are horrible. I could have done better talking in my sleep. About 80-95% of the voices are at least sub-average, if not worse. Some of the voices are good, but they still mispronounce everything. And around 35-50% of the voices are just inexplicably bad. I don't know where they found people who are capable of making their voices this bad, but they did. And they are knives of sound through your ears. Ugh. Another disappointment is the lack of any other language. A chinese track will probably never happen, but in DW04:Empires ( one of the two expansions) a japanese track was made available and it was sooooo much better. Really weird, but better. Oh well, every game has some fault and Dynasty Warriors is no exception. Moving on.

The game-play is what really saves DW. All the reviewers complain about it, but it is fun being almost a 1-man-army. I say almost because one of the things "improved" was the help your bodyguard and other officers provide. If you can call it help, since they will be constantly taking your future officer kills while your busy doing other things. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I find DW really fun to play. I think part of the problem reviewers have is DW isn't particularly innovative. Its seems that games which don't push a system to it's limits or advance a genre in some way, don't deserve recognition no matter how much fun they are to play. But moving on.

Another thing reviewers hate is the music. I admit it isn't amazing, or even really good, but it somehow matches the game. Warning though. If you hate electric guitars than you won't like this. 95% of the music is all about the big electric lead. And it honestly isn't really all that good, but it matches the game well in some way. I'll admit it the music definitely for everyone, but it's still fun in it's own little way.

Another unfortunate mistake made while the game was designed was the writing. It's horrible. A lot of it comes from a lack of character development. The flaws in the writing are made very apparent when it comes to the death of friends and family members. It's really hard to get past it , but doing so is a very large favor to yourself.

Last thing and that is: character design. For the most part it's decent with some exceptions. Some of the design is really good, but a lot of it isn't. The big problem is Bishonen design with some of the younger characters. Basically, lighter skin, long hair particularly around the sideburn area and a large lack of visible queues, which doesn't make much sense. If you can get past this you are doing yourself yet another favor, because there is some really good design.

It's really important that you have to understand that this game is very fun. Overall, it's not the greatest game in the world, but if you get past some of the more poorly designed things it's a whole lot of fun. I would definitely recommend it.
